CIPOWER — Master's-thesis projects |
More about the project and its partners can be found in the description of CIPOWER.
As well as the MSc projects, there are sometimes PhD positions available for new parts of CIPOWER's work. Work in a CIPOWER MSc project may also provide a good opening into a continuation as a PhD student.
See the list of Currently Available Projects.
Contact details for each project are provided on that page. For applications, please follow carefully the application procedure described below.
Projects listed on these webpage will be marked as taken, or be removed entirely, as soon as supervisors confirm that a student has been chosen.
There are no special times when sets of projects are advertised or when projects must start: the currently available projects are continually updated as new ones are approved and sponsored and students are accepted for them.
May 2011 — Three new projects have now been sponsored by Vattenfall.
February 2011 — Twelve new projects have been sponsored by ABB Corporate Research, in some cases with the student working at ABB.
February 2011 — Two new projects have sponsored and co-supervised by SvK, the Transmission System Operator for Sweden.
The industrial partners are currently:
More details of these, their conditions, and the university partners are found in the list of partners.
All projects are an academic/industrial collaboration, with "co-supervision" from the academic and industrial supervisors.
All projects have industrial sponsorship to pay some of the costs such as travelling.
The usual rate of sponsorship is a lump-sum of 30 000 SEK (over €3000 —
see conversion)
on successful completion of the project.
See the sponsor-specific details in the list of partners
for any variations.
The starting time can be arranged between student and supervisors. If a project is advertised as available, the student will usually be welcome to start as soon as possible, or may choose to arrange a later time with the supervisors.
If formally registered at a Swedish university, a Master's project is expected to give 30 ECTS credits, and typically lasts for 5–6 months. A 6-month duration is generally expected for any CIPOWER student's work.
In some projects the student will do most of the work within a company's research facilities.
In others the student will be mainly at a university.
The sponsoring company may require the student to make a final presentation of the work at
the company as well as at the university.
Some industrial sponsorship is required for any MSc project advertised within CIPOWER, along with industrial co-supervision and possible use of industrial facilities.
The university involved in supervision may be any one working within CIPOWER. Most of the projects have been so far at KTH, but others at Uppsala and outside Sweden are anticipated, subject to suitable sponsorship.
Other people in universities and industry within the InnoEnergy consortium may also register an interest in a project, to stay informed about its progress and have a chance of giving advice.
Applications and queries about an MSc project listed on this site should be sent to the
email address provided for that project. The format is mscNNN-app@cipower.ets.kth.se,
where NNN is the project number.
Queries not directly related to a project can be sent to msc-general@cipower.ets.kth.se.
An applicant may apply to multiple projects, but a different application should be sent to each, using the appropriate email address and including a specific description of the student's suitability for that project. The CV and grades would then be attached to each application.
Please include the following details in an application:
PDF is the most convenient format for attached files, but other formats are accepted if they open! A convenient method is to put the whole application as a single PDF file of a few pages.
To be eligible for one of these projects, the applicant should be studying for a masters-level degree, and be at the stage where they are ready to perform a "Masters-level project". Examples of the the types of project and degree that this description includes are the (typically) 6-month thesis for an MSc, the final-year project of an MEng or (~5-year) diploma, or the project ("examensarbete") at the end of the Swedish "civilingenjörs" degree.
It is expected and welcomed that many students who take these projects will not be enrolled for their degree at one of our universities, but are moving over from their universities to do just the project with us. Many are expected to be from other InnoEnergy partners or other European universities, but interested students studying at universities outside Europe are very welcome to apply.
From our point of view the degree subject could be engineering, physics, or possibly other subjects such as chemistry or maths for some projects. The supervisors of each project determine what educational background is necessary, and may state more specific requirements in the project description.
The student should of course check that his/her home university will approve the chosen project as being part of the degree.
How the student is formally registered and examined depends on the agreement reached for their specific project. The extremes range between the following, for a student S studying for a MSc/MEng/etc degree at "home" university X and coming to do an MSc project with CIPOWER university U and company C : —
1) S registers formally at the university of U, has supervisors from U, C and possibly also X, then publishes the thesis, is examined on it and has this "MSc Thesis Course" registered, all at U, and pays any required tuition fees at U; finally, X accepts this remote course as part of its degree.
2) S remains registered at X, spends time working at some combination of U, C and possibly X with supervisors involved from all, then finally publishes and is examined on the thesis at X.
A situation closer to 1) is usually preferable for us in CIPOWER, so that appropriate reward is provided (a thesis and a registered course) to the CIPOWER university partner for its expected input of supervision and other resources. The extreme situation 2) may occur if the student works mainly at the industrial partner, and the home university has a strong connection with the subject, but it is preferred that the student has a stronger contact with the CIPOWER academic and industrial partners.
If the student will be formally registered as taking an "MSc project course" at one of
our CIPOWER partner universities (so that they publish the thesis and are examined on
it there), they may have to pay tuition fees.
Note that this only applies to situations close to "case 1)", above, not to those where
the examination is performed at the home university.
Currently, for formal registration at KTH, EU citizens would not have to pay tuition fees,
but non-EU citizens would have to pay the newly-imposed standard rate of
KTH tuition fees.
