Project abstract

As it gets more and more difficult to plan outages for maintenance in the electric power transmission network, it is necessary to develop new methods for condition monitoring. This project focuses on circuit breakers and disconnectors. The methods should be done with energized equipment. Both failures of the electric contacts and the mechanical parts are studied.

An extension of the risk matrix with uncertainty, a survey of statistics and condition monitoring methods for circuit breakers and disconnectors, the method of condition measuring for a system with IR sensors at contacts at disconnectors, a thermography scheduling method, and a framework for lifetime modelling and condition measuring are presented. They can improve the planning of outages for maintenance.


Summary of work

2015. A survey of lifetime statistics and condition-monitoring methods for circuit breakers and disconnector has been presented. No method for monitoring electric contacts at the voltages of the transmission grid has been found. An analysis model of the temperature rise of disconnector contacts has been developed, based on data from IR sensors placed at the contacts. It can be used to rank disconnectors according to the need for maintenance.

2016. A disconnector renovation project has provided resistance measurements before and after, which gives an estimate of the effect of maintenance. Also it has given ideas for improvement of the measurement techniques.

2016. A statistical method for the choice of time for thermography has been presented at the conference PMAPS 2016. It explains two thirds of the variation of the current throughout the year using as independent variables the time of the day, the day of the week and the week number.

2016. A new method of estimating the uncertainty of the risk has been developed.

2017. A general framework for lifetime modelling and condition measuring is developed as a model with specified tasks. The framework is illustrated with examples. The effect of maintenance of the contacts is shown for four disconnectors.

2017. The uncertainty of the risk matrix is simulated for some cases.

2017. The doctoral thesis was written. It has also a chapter with a summary of the history of the Swedish electrical system.

2015. A visit for three months at the department of statistics of UC3M in Spain, to develop better methods of estimating lifetime with censored data.

2016. Invitation to hold a seminar about the reliability of the electrical system at the Centre for safety at KTH's School of Architecture and the Built Environment, for an undergraduate course in May.

2016. Invitation to join the Cigré working group A3.32 (Non-intrusive methods for condition assessment of distribution and transmission switchgear), as a consequence of a condition monitoring article.

2016. A visit for three months (September to December) at Kinectrics in Toronto, Canada, to develop a better understanding of the aging of electrical contacts and the treatment of failure data, together.

2017. The Cigré working group A3.32 (Non-intrusive methods for condition assessment of distribution and transmission switchgear), to which Per Westerlund contributes by supplying references and structuring them, by proof-reading and by writing the conclusion, is about to publish its technical brochure.

2017. Invitation to hold a seminar about the reliability of the electrical system at the Centre for safety at KTH's School of Architecture and the Built Environment, for an undergraduate course during spring.

2017. Attendence of the Cigré colloquium in Winnipeg, Canada, where the paper received the Best student paper award for Study Group A3.
