Project abstract

The aim with this thesis work is to improve diagnostic criteria for large high voltage power transformers. Many insulation failures in power transformers have a foregoing activity of partial discharges due to defects inside the insulation. PD activity of certain type of defects can produce problem for transformer insulation if it continue for long duration. Therefore it is important to identify the type of defect from the PD activity so to recognize the current danger for the transformer. It is also very important to understand how the insulation behaves adjacent to a defect. Aging process is investigated for one the most common defect which is a cavity discharge.


Summary of work

Laboratory setups were designed and built that simulate real defect inside a transformer. Signature of PD for those defects where recorded and compared.

Ageing of oil-impregnated paper was investigated for a case of cavity discharge. The evolution of PD parameters from inception of PD until puncture breakdown of the sample was investigated. Effect of various parameters was investigated on dielectric response of oil impregnated paper. It was found that PD activity can reduce the impulse breakdown strength significantly and it has a great influence on dielectric response of oil-impregnated paper.
