Project abstract

The prime objective of the work is to develop a suitable multilevel converter system with field programmable control scheme for renewable energy conversion and smart grid integration. Lysekil Wave Power Project is used as a reference test case of challenging renewable energy conversion and grid connection. Compared to the conventional two level inverter systems, the multilevel converter systems can provide better power quality, high voltage output, better power flow control and improved efficiency. The field programmable control system can generate ultrafast concurrent control signals to satisfy the highly demanding multilevel control requirements. The FPGA based system can also incorporate basic communication parts, which helps the system to synchronize with other modules of the power system. The work also focuses on effectively eliminating the shortcomings of conventional multilevel inverter system such as capacitor voltage imbalance, by utilizing the intelligent control scheme developed. All the technologies developed during the project can be utilised for power absorption, conditioning and grid integration of wave energy farms in the future.

Summary of work

2015 and before. Pulse delay Control Method (IL ripple averaging method) for Capacitor Voltage Balancing for TLB NPC.

2015 and before. Contour Based Dead-Time Harmonic Analysis method

2016. AC2AC Direct Conversion M2C topology based on 72 MMC cells prototype has been developed during the mobility to Siemens AG, Corporate Technology. The main application areas are Smart Grids, SSTs and Traction. 73 FPGAs based Master Slave real time distributed embedded controller back bone is also developed using OFC communication techniques.

2016. Various Grid integration strategies for WECs are simulated and analysed. DC link stress analysis is done for WEC interconnection systems.

Event log

2016. Industrial Research Mobility is to Siemens AG, Corporate Technology, Power Electronics Group from March to August 2016 (6 Months).

2016. Premium Award for Best Paper in IET Power Electronics Journal. This was received for a paper entitled "Pulse delay control for capacitor voltage balancing in a three-level boost neutral point clamped inverter" that was published in 2015. The award is given just once per year for this journal, for the best research work published there in the last 2 years. See more on the IET-PEL website.
