Project abstract

This Postdoctoral project will be oriented towards work on forecasting, operation and planning for dynamic rating of transformers, power lines and underground cables.

One part of the project is planned for work on dynamic rating forecasting and application of monitoring devices. Comparative analysis of two methods together and against each other.

A larger portion of the project will be devoted to work on dynamic rating of transformers and underground cables for optimal integration of renewable generation. Continued work on transformers and beginning of work of inclusion of dynamic rating of underground cables and other substation equipment to gain a complete picture of DR impact and implications.

Main goal of the project is to get a comprehensive view on the substation operation and possible ways to apply dynamic rating for maximization of operation efficiency. Additionally a detailed specification of digital solutions, which can be later applied to a real systems. Get a broader perspective on the subject of dynamic rating and it’s application as a part of the power system.

This project further builds on the previous work, which have been highly focused on applications and case studies, especially on using dynamic rating for integration of wind power.

Later on the project aims to look into integration of renewables using more dynamically rated components in the substation, as well as looking into combining the knowledge on dynamic rating of transformers, power lines and underground cables for better planning of the grid and increase share of renewable energy. The topic of forecasting for dynamic rating of different power components is also a part of the research plan (do we face other bottlenecks). This project will be a part of the work towards expansion of the grid and integration of new renewable generation using dynamic rating from a holistic power system perspective.

Summary of work

The general goal of the project is to look at the perspectives of using dynamic rating for power lines, underground cables, transformers and substation equipment. Identify the knowledge gaps; investigate and determine the medium to long-term research and development need. Quantify long and short-term benefits for the utilities when using dynamic rating. Clarify requirement for updates in specification processes and digital monitoring solutions.
