Project abstract

The growth of renewable penetration will have several impacts on the stability of power systems. The first goal of this project is to identify the issues in power systems with a "major" share of power electronics based devices. RMS models or phasor based models are typically used to perform intensive transient and frequency stability analysis. In order to accurately quantify the renewable penetration levels for the identified issues with respect to frequency and transient stability analysis, it is important to do this analysis for both RMS and EMT simulations. The next step of the project is to find potential solutions to these problems, using controls of power electronic devices such as grid forming converters.

Summary of work

2018. Performed literature review.

2019. Created an EMT model of a two-area four-generator system in PSCAD and designed full rated converter model for this system. Confirmed baseline comparison between EMT and already constructed RMS model. Performed comparative study between RMS and EMT models to identify limitations of RMS models.

2020. Systematically developed the voltage source converter model in PSCAD (EMT), to establish matching behavior between EMT and RMS (PowerFactory) environments. Identified a methodology and systematic approach to develop matching RMS and EMT systems, within different pieces of software. Created high penetration scenarios of the two-area four-machine system in RMS and EMT at different renewable penetration levels in order to identify the divergence in behavior that occurs at specific penetration levels, within the context of transient and frequency stability.
