Real time monitoring and control of rotor angle of generator is required to get clear indication regarding stability of power system. The first goal of this project is to perform a real-time rotor angle instability monitoring based on new developed algorithms such as Lyapunov exponent and also based on real-time measurements of the generator rotor angles, the stator voltages and currents as well as the field current. The second goal is to compare the measured rotor angle and field current with the conventional PMU-estimated quantities. The next step is to identify the critical generators for instability and thereby to apply a control action to stabilize the system and also to identify the coherent sets of generators involved in instability which might also be involved in different modes of electromechanical oscillations. Also we will identify and evaluate available PSS and their impact on power system damping. The last step is to explore if it is possible to perform the above aims only based on rotor angle measurements without using mathematical models describing the power system dynamics. After successful results, a similar study may be performed for short-term voltage instability.
