Project abstract

The objective of this Post doc project was to develop and characterize new types of resistive field grading materials for use in HVDC cable accessories, in order to allow more compact and reliable designs. Within the frame of this project a custom-built resistivity setup for high voltages was built and verified. The non-linear conductivity of polymer composites, filled with low amount of surface-modified, thermally reduced graphene oxide, was then assessed in collaboration with Martin Wåhlander (Ph.D. student, ML1: "High Voltage Insulation Materials Based on Functional Polymer Nanocomposites – Synthesis of nanocomposite master Batches"). It was found that the non-linear conductivity could be controlled by suitable surface modification via polymer grafting or silanization.

Summary of work

2016. The construction of the laboratory measurement set-up for insulation resistance and polarization/de-polarization testing was completed in Q3. This permits measurements of leakage currents, polarization effects and influence of chemicals, humidity and temperature on insulating materials as well as field grading materials. The set-up is currently used by several students in parallel projects within SweGRIDS.

2016. Accelerated aging experiments on field grading materials based on reduced graphene oxide in smaller scales has shown promising results and is planned to be upscaled for testing on larger and more realistic scales.
