Project abstract

In future smart grids, with a high amount of renewables and local power generation there will be substantial power variations over time and geographically. Switching devices, e.g. tap-changer, are used for fine-tuning the ratio of a transformer and hence the output voltage. Switching devices contain many moving parts which operate under harsh conditions. Silver is one of the commonly used contact materials due to its excellent electrical properties. However, the high cost and the poor mechanical properties such as high wear and friction of silver shorten its lifetime. The main goal of this project is to develop new electrical contact materials with lower cost and longer lifetime.

Summary of work

2015. Optimization of the preparation methods of different electrical contact materials. Preparation of different electrical contact alloys Characterization of the prepared alloys. Sintering of bulk contact samples.
