Project abstract

The project's purpose is to develop new electrode materials (conducting polymer, cellulose/fabrics) for organic matter based supercapacitors and a fabrication process that can be tested and implemented industrially first in consumer products for small scale storage and thereafter tune the demonstrator for testing in large scale grid applications. The research project is expected to 1) create new knowledge that can contribute to improved products and services in the energy sector, 2) help maintaining and strengthening the Swedish position in Smart Grids and Storage within the European context, 3) create value and job opportunities for Swedish society by linking education and research into innovation, 4) integrate PhD projects of the centre into KIC InnoEnergy innovation projects so that PhD projects benefit from value added activities from KIC InnoEnergy and exposed to the European dimension, 5) prepare for the expansion of centre’s activities with an application for renewal for another period of 4 years at the end of the first two years in 2013, 6) create disruptive technologies that would pave the way for future new products and startups in energy sector, 7) have several scientific publications in journals with excellent citations as mark of novelty and quality of the research.


Summary of work

A group of materials has been identified for polymerization to produce electrodes for a first prototype, namely isoindole-4,7-diones (IIDs). Polymerized IIDs would feature a conducting polypyrrole backbone with pending redox active quinone groups, with a theoretical capacity of up to 333 mAh/g. A computational study has been performed on IID monomers to understand the complex quinone redox chemistry and to identify the most attractive substitution pattern for the final battery cell. New types of quinone/pyrrole polymers have been synthesized and feature large capacities and fixed redox potentials. Combined electrochemical and spectroscopic characterization has been utilized to study the system experimentally. Other polymeric compounds have also been studied and tested in lithium ion battery cells.

In order to make flexible energy storage devices the active polymer material needs to be supported by a flexible matrix. Cellulose has previously been used as support material with promising results in terms of cycling stability and mechanical properties. In order to induce conductivity in the matrix a novel conducting filament has been developed. The support filament is based on cotton for good adhesion to the active polymer and contains stainless steel for introducing conductivity in the support. The support material has been found to withstand the conditions used for polymer attachment and will be tested as support material.
