Project abstract

The project aims to develop new, long cycling life, all-polymer-based supercapacitors, employing conventional solvent based electrolytes as well as ionic liquids, made in an industrially upscalable process with materials entirely from renewable recourses (carbon, nitrogen and oxygen) that can be integrated with Li ion battery technologies for grid storage applications to meet the future large scale energy storage demands, to manage fast transients at power-production peaks, as well as to energy storage and restitution in traction and industrial drives.


Summary of work

A first prototype optimization has been performed by analyzing how the properties of the electrode substrate influences the performance of the device and tailoring the substrate to give optimal charge capacity. In order to enable the integration of the cellulose-conducting polymer composite material with Li-ion battery technology the composite has been tested in various electrolytes and with solvent compatible current collectors for optimized performance. In this optimization procedure 22 different cell designs has been tested. The cause of the self-discharge in the prototype has been investigated with a mechanistic study, using electrochemistry and simulations.
