Project abstract

The PhD project is part of a larger project, working with ST4.

The workpackages in focus for this PhD include stability, cell resistance and self-discharge optimization of organic based batteries, development of organic based electrodes, and LIB cell designs, prototype development, preparations for up-scaling.

The overall project is based on experimental and theoretical methods to make a new, technologically and industrially feasible, class of organic matter based versatile LIBs (lithium-ion batteries) made of composite materials containing redox modified conducting polymers, lithium organic salts, other organic molecules and nanocellulose. In addition to a high energy density, the energy storage devices will be tailored to provide long cycling life and eco-friendly end-of-life handling, based on production using an up-scalable, sustainable process.


Summary of work

2015. Several different quinone monomers have been synthesised, and their properties analysed. Theoretical investigations on charge transport in the polymer backbone are also being performed.

2016. Detail investigation of a conducting redox polymer with combination of various in-situ techniques. A series of pyrrole-quinone derivatives have been synthesized and the resulted polymers have been investigated, showing potential adjustability of the conducting redox polymers.

2017. Continuing work on alternative quinone based electrode materials.
